Housing & Homelessness Committee (of NLC)

This effort is a committee of the city-wide Neighborhood Leaders Council (NLC), in which Friendly Area Neighbors participates. Its purpose is to:
  • Establish a resource group of neighborhood leaders with housing/homelessness subject matter expertise to assist neighborhood associations with homelessness related issues,
  • Provide a sounding board to identify and discuss issues facing neighborhoods related to homelessness, and
  • Support the acquisition and siting of shelter, sanitation, and other supports for our unhoused residents.
This group started in 2016 as the Vulnerable Populations Working Group of the Council of South Eugene Neighborhoods, and in 2018 it expanded and moved under the direction of NLC.

Activities to date include:
  • Supporting the location of supported housing for homeless youth in the converted, former Presbyterian Church at 3350 Willamette. The aim of the St. Vincent DePaul's Youth House is to get homeless students through high school.
  • Advocating for the relocation of Nightingale Health Sanctuary to 33rd Avenue & South Hilyard Street. This is an important step to decentralizing city sanctioned rest stops from their over-concentration in the  Whiteaker area.
  • Participating in the national Point in Time homeless count, scheduled every January. It provides a snapshot of the problem of homelessness to help policymakers target resources to the areas of the state experiencing the greatest need.
